Denture

Does it hurt a lot when I first wear my new denture?

When you first wear a denture, parts of your gums may get pressed or rubbed sore, much like new shoes rubbing your heel — this is a normal part of adjusting. In most cases, adjusting the tooth height and the inner surface of the denture makes it comfortable, and it is typical to need 2-3 follow-up adjustment visits over the first few weeks. However, if there is a sharp bony prominence on your gum ridge that keeps getting rubbed in the same spot, alveoloplasty (a small bone-smoothing procedure) can fix it — so please do not just put up with the discomfort and come in to see us.
