Orthodontics

How many times a day should I brush during orthodontic treatment?

During orthodontic treatment, the rule is to brush every time you eat — including snacks, that comes to 4-5 times a day or more. Food easily gets trapped around the appliance, raising the risk of cavities and gum inflammation. Effective care includes 1) using an orthodontic toothbrush to clean above and below the brackets separately, 2) using an interdental brush to clean under the wire, and 3) rinsing thoroughly with water when brushing is not possible while out. However, if your gums swell or bleed frequently, it is a sign your oral care is falling short, so please have your brushing technique reviewed at your checkup.
