Can TMJ problems cause facial asymmetry?

Yes, it can happen. If only one jaw joint wears down (degenerative change), or growth of one joint is impaired during the growth period, the left and right jaw lengths can become different and the chin can shift to one side, causing facial asymmetry. TMJ disorders in growing adolescents in particular can affect facial growth, so early diagnosis is important. We recommend an examination 1) if the chin appears shifted to one side, or 2) if the jaw moves in a zigzag when opening the mouth.
