What's the difference between scaling and gum treatment?

Scaling is a preventive procedure that removes tartar visible above the gum line, while gum treatment (periodontal treatment) removes tartar and inflamed tissue from deep within the gums. 1) Early stage with only tartar and mild gum bleeding — scaling is enough. 2) Periodontitis with swollen gums and deep pockets — gum treatment under local anesthesia is needed. 3) Severe bone loss — periodontal surgery or guided tissue regeneration may be required. Scaling is covered once a year by National Health Insurance for those aged 19 and older, and most gum treatments are also covered.
