Yes, peri-implantitis can be treated, with the approach depending on the stage. 1) In the early stage (gum inflammation only), it can often improve with scaling, disinfection, and improved oral hygiene. 2) If the inflammation has progressed into the bone, surgical treatment is needed - we open the gum, clean the implant surface, and add a bone graft if necessary. Unlike natural teeth, implants do not transmit pain well, so the inflammation tends to be discovered late. If the gum around the implant becomes swollen, bleeds, or feels loose, please come in right away. If treatment is delayed and a lot of the alveolar bone has already been resorbed, the implant may need to be removed and replaced.
