The gums around my implant are red and swollen. Why is this?

Red, swollen, bleeding gums around an implant may indicate peri-implant inflammation. The early stage, called "peri-implant mucositis," can be reversed with gum treatment and good oral hygiene, but if left untreated and it progresses to "peri-implantitis," the bone supporting the implant may dissolve and the implant may need to be removed.
