My crown looks stained. Can it be whitened?

Unfortunately, restorations such as composite resin, crowns, and laminates do not respond to whitening agents and cannot be brightened with whitening treatment. Discolored restorations need to be replaced in order to improve their color. When natural teeth and restorations are mixed together, the order matters. We recommend 1) first whitening the natural teeth to brighten them, 2) waiting about 2 weeks for the color to stabilize, and then 3) fabricating new restorations to match the brightened tooth color. If the staining is only on the surface, scaling and polishing alone may improve it, so please come in for an examination first.
