I bleed a lot during scaling. Is that okay?

Bleeding during scaling is a natural reaction when the gums are inflamed, so there is no need to worry. Inflamed gums have dilated blood vessels and bleed with even light contact, and the more severe the inflammation, the more they bleed. Once the tartar is removed, the gums usually settle over 1 to 2 weeks and the bleeding decreases. However, if you still bleed every time you brush or your gums stay swollen after scaling, gum disease may be progressing, so you should have a periodontal consultation.
