Doesn't scaling grind down or separate the teeth?

Scaling does not shave your teeth down or create gaps between them. It uses ultrasonic vibration to break off only the tartar attached to the tooth surface, so the tooth itself is not damaged. If your teeth feel as though gaps have appeared, it is because the tartar filling that space has been removed, revealing the space that was always there, and you adjust to it within a few days. In fact, leaving tartar in place can dissolve the supporting bone and make those spaces genuinely larger.
