When should a child move from low-fluoride to higher-fluoride toothpaste?
Current Korean and international guidelines recommend skipping the low-fluoride stage: use toothpaste with 1,000 ppm or more of fluoride from the time the first tooth appears, while controlling the amount so your child does not swallow it. 1) When the teeth start coming in, use a rice-grain-sized smear, and 2) from around age 3, once the child can spit toothpaste out, increase to a pea-sized amount. Low-fluoride toothpaste (under 500 ppm) has a weaker cavity-prevention effect and is recommended less and less. However, if your child keeps swallowing toothpaste, it is better to reduce the amount and practise spitting than to lower the concentration.
