Pediatric
I heard that using a pacifier too long makes the front teeth stick out. When should we stop?
A pacifier is best given up around age 2 at the latest. Continuing past age 3 can cause an open bite in which the front teeth do not meet, protrusion of the front teeth, or narrowing of the upper jaw. Fortunately, if it is stopped before age 3, mild changes in alignment often correct themselves. If stopping is difficult, we suggest a stepwise approach: 1) cut back during the daytime first, 2) then allow it only at bedtime, and 3) gradually stop altogether. However, if an open bite remains past age 4, a pediatric dental examination is needed.
