Are there different brushing methods for different ages?

Yes, the recommended brushing method differs by age. 1) Before the teeth come in and through the first baby tooth: wipe with damp gauze or a silicone finger brush. 2) During the baby-teeth years (ages 2 to 6): use the Fones method, brushing in small circles, with a parent always finishing the job. 3) Once the permanent teeth start coming in (age 6 and up): switch to the rolling method, sweeping from the gums toward the tooth. Until the early elementary years, when hand control is still developing, it is best for a parent to brush once more after your child has finished. We also provide age-appropriate brushing instruction at check-ups.
