How often should children have check-ups?

For children we recommend a check-up every 3 to 6 months. Baby teeth have thinner enamel than permanent teeth, so cavities progress faster, and early cavities are hard to see from the outside. Every 3 months suits 1) children who get cavities often or have had treatment, while every 6 months suits 2) children whose oral hygiene is well managed; having fluoride applied at the check-up adds further protection. However, if you see a dark spot or a white patch on a tooth, or your child hurts when chewing, please come in right away regardless of the interval.
