My child is very afraid of dental treatment. Should they be treated against their will?

We do not recommend holding a child down to force treatment. The fear of forced treatment can leave a lifelong trauma that makes them avoid dental care. For children who find it hard to cooperate, we can proceed comfortably with 1) behavior management that starts with simple procedures and builds up gradually, 2) nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sedation, or 3) sedation (sleep) treatment when many teeth need work. However, if there is acute pain or swelling, do not delay - coming in quickly keeps the treatment from becoming more extensive.
