Yes, cavities in baby teeth do need treatment. If a cavity in a baby tooth is left alone, 1) the inflammation can affect the permanent tooth bud growing beneath the root, 2) if the baby tooth is lost too early, the neighboring teeth tip into the space and leave too little room for the permanent tooth, causing crowding and malocclusion, and 3) if it hurts and your child chews on only one side, it can affect eating and jaw development. Depending on its position, a baby tooth may need to serve until around age 12. If the decayed baby tooth is not about to come out and be replaced by a permanent tooth soon, it must be treated.
