When should fluoride application start? Is there a recommended interval?
Fluoride application can start once the first tooth has come in, and every 3 to 6 months is ideal. For very young children we use fluoride varnish, which sets on the tooth, so it can be applied safely even before a child is able to spit; once they can spit water out, gel and tray methods can be used as well. Fluoride has proven effectiveness in hardening the tooth surface and preventing cavities. We recommend 1) every 3 months for children who get cavities often, and 2) every 6 months for children with good brushing habits and few cavities. When the permanent molars are coming in, combining fluoride with sealants gives even greater protection. We will advise the right interval after an examination shows your child's cavity risk.
