My lips feel strange after anesthesia. Will it return to normal?
Yes, the sensation returns to normal with time. Local anesthesia usually wears off over 2 to 4 hours, and anesthesia in the lower jaw also numbs the lip and chin, so it can feel as though it lasts longer. While the area is numb you may bite your lip or cheek without noticing, so wait until the anesthesia has worn off before eating, and avoid hot drinks because of the risk of burns. However, if the altered sensation continues beyond a day, there is a rare possibility of nerve damage, so please come in to have it checked.
