How is dry mouth treated?

Treatment for dry mouth depends on the cause. The usual sequence is 1) sip water often in small amounts, 2) stimulate saliva flow with sugar-free gum, and 3) if symptoms are severe, use artificial saliva (an oral moisturizer) or a saliva-stimulating medication. Medications such as those for blood pressure, depression, and allergies are sometimes the cause, so if that applies to you, discuss adjusting them with the prescribing doctor. A dry mouth greatly increases the risk of cavities and gum disease, so we recommend regular check-ups and fluoride care alongside.
